Our founder, H.M. Harris, began his career in a Kenton, Ohio jewelry store while in high school. He was greatly influenced by Robert Shipley Sr. who started the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the AGS (American Gem Society). His contact with Professor Shipley motivated him to become one of the first Certified Gemologists in the United States and Canada.
Mr. Harris founded the company in Sidney, Ohio, in February of 1946, immediately following World War II. Through hard work and strong business ethics, Mr. Harris was awarded membership into the AGS in 1950. Mr. Harris served on many civic boards as well as two terms as President of the Ohio Jewelers Association. In 1976, after graduating from the Gemological Institute of America, Mark E. Harris joined his father in business. Six years later Mark purchased controlling interest of the company and became CEO of Harris Jeweler. The partnership between father and son saw continued growth to a level of prominence in the Miami Valley and the surrounding communities.
In 2007, after graduating from Miami University and the Gemological Institute of America, Bonnie Harris Frey joined her father in the family business. The next year, Bonnie followed in her grandfathers footsteps and earned the title of Certified Gemologist Appraiser from the American Gem Society, an honor awarded to less than 1% of jewelers in the world and the most prominent in the jewelry industry. Two years later, in 2009, Mark retired as Bonnie took over at the helm of the business.
